I was invited to Patti Provost reception for her art showing at Carpe Diem. I was very impressed by her art showing in that setting. The restaurant was very warm and made us all feel welcome. Patti’s work was shown exceptionally well. Kudos to Carpe Diem and Patti Provost.
I am hoping someone reading this blog might have found a red cell phone yesterday on W. Ponce. It is my work phone and it has my life in it. If found, or have any ideas for finding it please call me @(404)373-7260.
Thank you so much.
Andrea,
We haven’t seen your phone but are keeping a look out. Let us know if you find it!
Jonda,
This is a beautiful time of year to eat outside at Carpe Diem. Thanks for the tip re: the art.

FILL UP AT LEON’S FULL SERVICE WHILE SUPPORTING THE ATLANTA COMMUNITY FOOD BANK
Leon’s Hosts April 14 Supper Club
ATLANTA (April 1, 2009) – It hasn’t taken long for Decatur residents and food lovers across metro Atlanta to embrace Leon’s Full Service, the latest eatery to open in Decatur’s thriving restaurant scene. Perhaps diners are drawn to the sense of community at Leon’s as much as they are to the great pub fare you can find there. A self-described “community-driven restaurant and bar,” Leon’s will stand by that motto when it hosts the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s Supper Club on Tuesday, April 14.
Supper Club is a monthly event that allows diners the convenience of enjoying a meal at some of Atlanta’s hottest restaurants while supporting their community. Each month, a different restaurant serves as host, and 20 percent of the evening’s proceeds benefit Atlanta’s Table, the prepared food rescue project of the Food Bank.
Leon’s serves up its Belgian-inspired pub fare in a former gas station on the corner of Church Street and East Ponce de Leon in Downtown Decatur, hence the name Leon’s Full Service. The menu features such Belgian favorites as pub frites with a variety of dipping sauces and “leige” waffles, along with a variety of other starters and snacks including: crispy rabbit tenders with lemon caper relish, and currywurst and grilled local beef frankfurter with madras curry catsup.
If you’re in the mood for a light meal, combine a sandwich or salad with a side or enjoy the full dining experience by choosing from a variety of mains including: niman ranch pork osso bucco with roasted butternut squash, braising greens and Gordon DIPA jus; oven fried all natural Ashley farms ½ chicken with stone ground grits and brown ale-mushroom jus or p.e.i. mussels in witbier and lemongrass broth among other delicious options.
Like its counterpart The Brick Store Pub, Leon’s has a full bar featuring a number of European beers to pair with your meal or enjoy all on their own. Specialty cocktails and a variety of wines are also available.
Leon’s is located at 131 E. Ponce de Leon, Decatur 30030. Open for dinner Sunday through Thursday, 5 p.m. – 1 a.m.; Friday and Saturday, 5 p.m. – 2 a.m. For more information, call 404.687.0500 or visit http://www.leonsfullservice.com.
Supper Club was created in the late 1990s to celebrate the partnership between Atlanta’s Table and Atlanta’s hospitality community. Atlanta’s Table, a project of the Food Bank, provides approximately 40,000 pounds of prepared food for Atlanta’s hungry each month. With sponsorship from Ethic Inc., Jezebel magazine, TrendCRM and 92.9 dave fm, Atlanta’s Table Supper Club generates funds to ensure continued operations of the project. For more information about Supper Club, visit http://www.ACFB.org, or contact Daphne Hill at 678.553.5996 or daphne.hill@ACFB.org.

SEEKING PHOTOS OF CLAIREMONT FLOODING YESTERDAY (Tue 11/10/09) !
Hi neighbors,
Did you snap any photos of the Great Flood yesterday in the 600 block of Clairemont, south of Scott Blvd? If so, please email them to me at organicbarb@yahoo.com
I heard it disabled both northbound lanes, stretched for at least 3 houses, was nearly up to my front steps, was knee-high on teenagers walking through, caused cars to stall, and required several Decatur police & fire personnel to manage the traffic single-file.
Thanks,
Barbara Davis
Does anyone know what’s going on with the store Taste? It’s been closed for about a month now. Will it reopen?

Dear Friends:
Greetings! I do hope this note finds you well.
You are invited to participate in an open conversation. The First Christian Church of Decatur is holding open conversations on both August 18, at 7:30PM in our Fellowship Hall, and again on Saturday, August 21 at 10AM in our Church and Community Park and Playground on Nelson Ferry Road.
This is an open conversation for both the church and the wider community to discern whether to formulate plans and collect resources to build a new community recreation center dedicated to promoting programs, which could then benefit the citizens of the Decatur community by providing excellent facilities and staff for neighborhood programs such as afterschool education and tutoring, health and wellness, sport and athletics, meeting rooms, language and cultural projects, mental health and spiritual wellness services, and so forth. Currently we have a gym facility we have chosen to close for a variety of reasons, which leads us to ask you and each other, “What can we do with our land to help meet specific needs in Decatur?”
There is a valid and practical precedent for such an open conversation and an expectant hope.
In 1998, First Christian Church of Decatur hosted an open meeting to ask our neighbors, “What do you think should be done with our land on Ponce and Nelson Ferry?” In 1999, residents of the Ponce De Leon Heights neighborhood joined hands with the members and friends of the First Christian Church of Decatur to revitalize 1.3 acres of church property with the goal of creating a church and community park. A Playground Task Force was formed, and its 5 members met monthly for close to ten years, producing a capital fund campaign, a terrific park, and one Decatur Home Town Hero — Mr. John Hashimoto. By 2003, we raised over $75,000 in donations, including a $5,000 grant from the Decatur Beer Festival circa 2000; $20,000 from city residents; and $50,000 from the membership of the church. The funds were pooled to plan, grade, build, and maintain a park and playground that is loved and used by an average of 200 families per week throughout the year. Somebody say, “Amen!”
Practicing hospitality is a central tenet of this congregation’s faith journey. For the Christian Church having an open door is not only an ecclesial policy, it is a way of being. Formed in 1921 and relocated from North Adams Street to downtown Decatur in 1950, First Christian Church of Decatur has a long and significant history of civic-minded ministry. We are delighted to open our doors “eight days a week” to host Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, local and federal Elections, music lessons and recitals, other churches, community organizations and local boards, a lawn for viewing fireworks, a park for playing and enjoying carnivals, and safe space for city-wide gatherings around spiritual and social concerns. We calculate that while our church has 100-125 worshipers on Sunday morning, we regularly welcome an average of 1,000 people per week in our facilities, including the church building and playground.
We built a gym in 1970 that was widely used by a variety of church and city groups for basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, dances, aerobics, and roller skating. By 1997, the gym had fallen into disrepair for a variety of reasons, and is currently not in use. However, the congregation is ready to begin to raise the following question with our city’s citizens and one another: “What can we do with our land to help meet specific needs in Decatur?” Out of this open church and community conversation may emerge (1) the will and (2) the way to establish a new Church and Community Center to foster and build relationships, bodies, minds, and souls. Or, it may not! Come, listen and share and let’s discern together where the Spirit is leading us.
If you have any questions or concerns or suggestions, please contact me in person at the church, by phone at 404-378-3621, or by email at citykid4evr@gmail.com.
Shalom,
James

Hello, I am a local student at F.AVE. I am doing a project on the historical values of my hometown, Decatur GA. I was wondering if somebody could possible tell me an email for the city commissioners office so I could do some research. I am also going to be relating my findings to what we are learning about; the three branches of government. Even if you have another idea for me that would be great! Thank You!
